Keep Maine Clean is a statewide initiative dedicated to conserving Maine's natural beauty by working to reduce litter, increase recycling and promote the responsible use of private lands used for public recreation.
Founded in a response to increasing amounts of roadside litter and illegal dumping on private lands,
KMC recruits and engages outdoor enthusiasts willing to pick up and recycle trash along our roads, on our
beaches and lakes, and in our fields and forests.
Our beautiful landscapes are filled with trash, except in places where Mainers are picking it up.
The public’s health, as well as, the health of our wild critters is jeopardized by this trash. KMC works to encourage
folks to pick up and recycle this trash as they walk Maine’s roads, beaches and forests and utilize private lands
for public recreation.
Illegal dumping on private lands threatens public recreational access!
Although Maine is 94% privately owned, Mainers have enjoyed the centuries long tradition of public use. Because
of problems with littering and illegal dumping, about 30 percent of private landowners were “actively considering” placing restrictions or prohibiting access to their property, according to a 2008 survey of landowners conducted
by the University of Maine.
If you are not already picking up trash, it’s time to start!
We encourage you to carry three bags: one for trash, one for redeemable items, and one for recyclables.
We also encourage you to donate any funds from redeemable items to a local project or charity. If you’re not familiar with your town’s rules regarding recyclables, don’t hesitate to inquire at the Town Office or your local transfer station.
More to come…
Throughout the fall and winter, we will focus on publicizing the program and recruiting participants. The first of our regular newsletters will go after the first of the year. Soon, we hope to be facilitating local get-togethers with Keep Maine Clean leaders/participants in your town and/or region, to better organize efforts.
Please sign up today and let us know how you KEEP MAINE CLEAN!

Keep Maine Clean is a statewide program sponsored by Maine Resource Recovery Association.
Maine Resource Recovery Association is the state’s non-profit trade organization for recycling and solid waste professionals. MRRA works statewide to promote environmentally friendly and economically sustainable recycling and solid waste management practices, so that Mainers everywhere can recycle more and businesses and municipalities can save money.
Headquartered in Newport, MRRA’s membership includes over 162 Maine towns and cities along with recycling and waste-management businesses. We are pleased to host this important initiative.
MRRA is very grateful to George Smith and James Cote for bringing this project to us, and look forward to their continued participation.
